All visitors to Bhutan are required to obtain visas. Passport details for visa processing must reach Thimphu at least three weeks prior to the date of travel in Bhutan. Clients entering via Phuntsholing must bring two passport size photographs. Visas are actually issued on arrival in Bhutan. The visa fee is US$ 20, to be paid on entering the Kingdom.
Bhutan’s unit of currency is the Ngultrum (Nu). 1 Nu = 100 Chetrum. The Ngultrum is fixed at parity with the Indian rupee, and the Indian rupee circulates in Bhutan also. Visa and American Express credit cards are accepted only in few places. Visitors are advised to carry traveler checks along with some cash (US Dollars)
By Air: Druk Air, Bhutan’s national airline, is the only airline that serves Paro, the only airport in Bhutan. All visitors flying into Bhutan must enter through the Paro Airport. The flight into Paro is one of the most spectacular in the world. Whether flying along the Himalayan Mountains from Kathmandu or over the foothills from Calcutta, each flight is a mesmerizing aeronautical feat and offers an exciting descent into the Kingdom. Delays sometimes occur because of the changeable Himalayan weather, so travelers are well advised to add an extra day onto their trips in case of inclement weather conditions.
By Road: The nearest Indian airport is in Bagdogra, which can be reached by plane from Calcutta and Delhi. The road from Bagdogra connects to Phuntsholing, a border town in Bhutan. It is a 3-4 hour drive from the airport at Bogadogra to Phuntsholing and another 6 hours, more or less, from Phuntsholing to Thimphu or Paro.
