Bhutan's Paro Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and it provides an opportunity to look in depth at village life, its economy, its environment, and its religious life. It also offers some of the most beautiful examples of Buddhist temples and monasteries in the country.

Day 1
Arrival in Paro. Register at Hotel. Relaxation and Introductory lecture.

Day 2
Visit to National Museum and Paro Dzong. Religious and architectural monuments in the valley. Traditional dance performance in evening.

Day 3
Visit to a village in the valley, meeting with villagers and their headman to discuss local agricultural life. Visit a farm and have a typical Bhutanese dinner with a Paro Valley family.

Day 4
Visit the Paro weekly market. Meeting with Paro District Officials to discuss the development of the valley in the future. Climb to Taktsang. Meet with students from Teacher's Training College and Paro Schools in evening.

Day 5
Early morning drive to Thimphu. City tour. Evening meeting with Thimphu city officials and national officials to gain their perspective on Paro Valley.

Day 6
Attend Paro Festival (depending on dates and season)

:: himalayan market, food, and cuisines    
Himalayan, especially Bhutanese, cuisine is not well known in the outside world. While borrowing elements of Indian and Chinese cuisine, it is also unique in its own style and tastes. This excursion includes visits to agricultural areas to see how Bhutanese grow food, to markets to see the variety and economics of food, to restaurants and homes. Not least, it includes a course in the preparation of primary Bhutanese dishes.

Day 1
Arrival in Paro. Transfer to Hotel. Relaxation and introductory lecture.

Day 2
Paro Valley: National Museum, Paro Dzong, Drukgyal Dzong (romantic ruins), farm visit. Drive to Thimphu.

Day 3
Lecture on food production in Bhutan and the economics of the weekend market. Visit the market to study the varieties of food available. City tour of Thimphu. First cooking class. A typical Bhutanese dinner.

Day 4
Second visit to the market to observe the other products for sale. Visit a Temple. Second cooking class. Dinner at a typical Bhutanese neighborhood bar and cafe.

Day 5
Meeting with Ministry of Agriculture officials to discuss developments in the food industry in Bhutan. Visit to Handicraft Emporium and to the art school. Third cooking class. Afternoon at leisure. Musical performance followed by dinner.

Day 6
Morning at leisure. Afternoon preparation of dinner under guidance of Bhutanese cooks. Group eats the dinner it itself has prepared

:: bhutan's national game - archery    

Archery is the Bhutanese national sport, but it is more than that, because it is also an important cultural activity. The focus of this tour is this special Bhutanese form of archery. Attendance at a tournament, lectures on the history and style of Bhutanese archery, the dancing associated with it, the construction of traditional bows and arrows, and actual practice and training in Bhutanese archery, are some of the activities of this tour.

Day 1
Arrival in Paro. Transfer to Hotel. Welcome and introductory lecture.

Day 2
Visit to National Museum and important cultural sites in Paro Valley. Visit Taktsang.

Day 3
Early morning drive to Thimphu. City tour. Afternoon at leisure. Evening meeting with officials from National Archery Federation of Bhutan.

Day 4
Lecture on aspects of Bhutanese archery and demonstration of use of traditional bows and arrows. Attendance at an archery contest and evening meeting with archers.

Day 5
Training in traditional Bhutanese archery. Evening performance of traditional dance and music.

Day 6
Training in archery and participation in archery contest. Farewell dinner.

Day 7
Transfer to Paro and departure.
