| Bhutan may be a small country, but it is remarkably diverse in ecological zones and environments. It ranges from the tropical south through temperate climes to the High Himalayas. Bhutan consequently, is remarkably rich in flora. In the south one finds rice agriculture and bananas and oranges, while, in less than a hundred miles, you reach regions where high altitudes where the only crops are barley and winter wheat. Moreover, vast areas of the country remain outside the influence of heavy population and industrialization, so that the flora can be observed in their still natural environment. Because of its variety and its pristine condition, Bhutan has long attracted the interest of botanists from Europe. In fact, experiments have been conducted to grow many Himalayan plants and flowers in Europe to enrich the environment there. This tour takes you through three different environments in the most delightful Bhutanese seasons, Spring and Summer. We range from the apple region of Paro to the Thimphu valley and the lower, and warmer, Punakha region where rice, bananas and oranges are grown. And we will search for the famous Blue Poppy.
In addition to the rich world of Bhutanese flowers and decorative plants, the country is rich in medicinal plants and herbs. The 'Flower and Botanical Tour' covers a larger part of the country and varieties of environments than the 'Blue Poppy Tour' and a significant amount of attention is paid to medicinal plants and herbs and to the ways of identifying and collecting them. This tour brings you close to the relationship between the world of plants and the social world that depends upon them for beauty and for health. |
